The Sheep are at liberty in the Forest of Dean, until later!!!!!!!!!!! When you visit the Forest of Dean, you will be sure to see lots of sheep roaming around the forest and the roads. This is due to an ancient right bestowed upon foresters from Norman times. The right applies to people born within the Hundred of St. Briavels (effectively anywhere in the forest). The sheep keepers, known locally as "Sheep Badgers" simply turn their sheep out to graze. They are visited very regularly, and you may be fortunate to see one of the Badgers working with his sheepdogs.

Tarri. (R.I.P)

Tarri was the best dog you ever could meet, kind and sharing of things. She used to come everywhere with me, birdwatching, butterflies, dragonflies and everything that nature holds.
I had her from 8 weeks to now at the great old age of 16. People everywhere that saw her as a caring dog, she used to run alongside me, (me on the scooter), and did lot of miles.

I love mushrooms, but not this one. It is a Bracket fungus, at least I think it is. I photographed this one at Parkend.

The Grey Wagtail is forever hunting on rivers for little insects. Sometimes they seem to be stagnant, and then it has seen its prey and goes running after. They seem quite friendly, and why not. I for one wouldn’t hurt it.

The picture was taken at Mallards Pike, the place where all those people seem to gather. I really don't know why, maybe it's something going on; there's a strange thing that you have to hang in the air while it is being swung about. Go Ape, that is what they they call it. It is a nice spot to have a picnic, surrounded by other people! Occasionally, you can get a little time alone and can see lots of nature. The statue is of a frog with a mermaid riding on its back.

The Coot was one of a few that were living at Cannop Ponds. They were squabbling and fighting, I think it must be the time to get ready for mating.

Time Sunwheel is a piece of Art, but it isn't very good when it is dark. I'm a bit silly, but I cannot work it out. It is at the Cyril Harts Arboretum.

Wednesday 20 February 2008

The Shelduck was photographed at Lydney harbour. There usually are two of them, but this time there was only one. I suspect the other one was around the corner, a bit further than I could get round to.

Tuesday 19 February 2008

The Eagle Owl was filmed at The Pludds horticultural Society, and it was handled by Barn Owl Centre of Gloucester. Quite a magnificent sight. Should we allow them to stay in this country? What do you think?

Monday 18 February 2008

Nuthatch is generally found in the woods, where I picked up this one. It was at the Cyril Hart Arboretum, good place for Nuthatches. I was waiting for the Brambling which I had seen there, but it wasn't to be. So I'll be grateful with this one.

Sunday 17 February 2008

The Pied Wagtail seems to get everywhere, in fields, town centres and on a busy roads. You can notice them by the constant bobbing of their tails.

Saturday 16 February 2008

Greenfinch. I photographed this in my garden. After last year, which nearly was a disease that had killed them out, they have started to emerge again to grow into a largish amount. They will, I hope, be one of the many birds at our feeders.

Chiloe Widgeon

This was an escapee from, I think, from Slimbridge WWT. It must have flown to Lydney Boating pool. It stayed for a couple of days and then it disappeared. In Slimbridge, there were loads of them, so they didn't miss this one.

Mistle Thrush photographed at Moseley Green

Two of them came up around me, my camouflage was good but, it lost the advantage when it heard the shutter closing. Not good for Canon D30, I wonder if its time to get D40! Please tell me your comments.

Blue Tit at Cannop Ponds

The people, who are filling the feeders, deserve my compliments. There are plenty of them. The most prolific of the birds, is the Blue Tits. What a beautiful bird.

Farmyard Duck (A sort of Mallard Duck)

A Farmyard Duck enjoys swimming around with other Mallard Ducks, but he seems to be a loner, they don't want him. It looks alright when he is in the water, but walking is terrible. It is nearly impossible for it to stand up. He's good in water though.

Small Tortoiseshell butterfly was the first of this year, it must have been the warmth. This isn't the right photograph as you can see, um, the Buddleia flowers from June to September.

Thursday 7 February 2008

The Grey Squirrel is such a cuddlesome creature; and what it's done to the Red Squirrel (native of these isles), is easy to forgive. It only lives, like everyone else. Here it is, nibbling its way through the seeds on the feeders/tables at Cannop Ponds.

Rook

Is it really a roof top bird, at least it seems like it. It does build a rookery, high up in trees. Living on leatherjackets, worms and a dose of grain.

Reed Bunting. (Cannop Ponds)

The Reed Bunting is an intuitive bird, or seems to be. He doesn't move when he is photographed, and using a flash. Food is his prime mood. They are quite numerous at this time of year.

Red Kite. Photographed by my brother Pete.

The Red Kite is a beautiful bird. It used to be a rare sight, but now you can see them up in the air, in flight. This one was in Wales, that wonderful place of Gigrin Farm, South Street, Rhayader, Powys.
